The Evening Star Quilt Block

Evening Star Quilt Block

This mystery quilt is designed to show you two different ways to make perfect flying geese blocks. The clue links are listed at the bottom of this tutorial. To print just this clue, use the green Print Friendly button at the bottom of this page.

In this clue, you are starting to make the blocks for the actual quilt.

Assemble:

  • The Flying Geese blocks you made using the Quilt-in-a-day method (Block One)
  • The Four-Patch blocks you made
  • (20) 3-1/2″ Medium squares
  • (20) 3-1/2″ Light squares

Sew two flying geese units to either side of a four patch, making sure to get the medium corner of the four patch in the upper right hand corner. Keep the flying geese unit on top when you are sewing the seam so you can make sure you are sewing through the triangle tip of the flying geese unit. This will help you keep your points sharp. Press as to the Flying Goose. (See diagram at the bottom of the page.)

Evening Star Quilt Block Center

Sew a medium 3-1/2″ square to the one side of two flying geese unit. Sew a light 3-1/2″ square to the other side.  Be sure both your flying geese blocks are pointing in the same direction when you do this. Press to the Flying Goose.

Evening Star Quilt Block Top and Bottom Row

Sew these units to the top and bottom of the rectangle you made in the first step. Make sure the medium is in the upper right hand corner.  Again, keep the flying geese unit on top so you can make sure you are sewing through the triangle tip of the flying geese unit. Pin the intersections and ease into place if necessary. Don’t twist any seams! Press as shown below.

Evening Star Quilt Block with Pressing Directions

Make a total of (10) blocks.  You can chain stitch these to make your sewing more efficient.  When you are chain stitching the corner blocks to the sides of the flying geese blocks, double check to ensure those points are all facing in the same way. Press as shown above.

IF YOU ARE MAKING THE LARGER SIZE
You will need more blocks. You will need to make a total of (15) Evening Star blocks.
