Bunny in the Brambles – a QST border. (Skip if you are making the smaller version)

Illustration of the Bramble Border

It’s time to prepare the place for little creatures to hide during a summer storm.  This is a bramble border is made from QSTs and is full of twists and turns and surprises.  It will look quite ordinary when you create it, but wait until you add it to the quilt top!

If you just got here, you are following a summer mystery quilt.  It is being revealed in a series of weekly clues on the blog posted every Monday from the introduction before Memorial Day and continuing every week until September  2, 2019.

Assemble:

  • (48) 4-1/2″ QSTs (from July 8)
  • (24) 3″ x 4-1/2″ two-part rectangle blocks (from June 10)

Sew a 3″ x 4-1/2″ rectangle blocks between (2) QST blocks so that the outer border triangle matches up with the two-part rectangle as shown.

Notice that you are going to get two different sets of blocks. It’s okay – it will make a very interesting design later on.

Quilt Blocks

Press the QST to the orange and green strip set. Make (24) of these sets. Each set should measure 11″ long.

I twirled the seams of my QSTs, but pressed the seam of the two-part strip open. No special reason, it just seemed to lay flatter.

Quilt Blocks

Sew these sets in (4) groups of (6) each. Each group should measure 63-1/2″ long. Notice how the colors end up next to each other?  This creates a lot of movement in the final quilt. Save any extra orange or green strips that you have – you will need them in the final clue.

Thank you for providing a home for those bunnies!

  1. My strips are only measuring 64 1/2” when completed. All other measurements in the pieces are correct.

  2. Hmmm. It worked for me, but I might have adjusted it without thinking about it. Wait until you need it for the border. If you have to add two more strips, it’s really not going to show.
